Playful punctuation in primary children’s narrative writing

Framed within the fields of applied linguistics and language play, writing three attainment groups 9–11-year-old children was used to investigate their use ludic (playful) punctuation in composition an imaginative narrative. The scripts were from a larger repeat-design study development that addressed range linguistic features. It became apparent contained play features, including punctuation, these then systematically studied. A total 71 stories analysed identify categorise playful this task. found, most notably quotation marks, exclamation marks question marks. In contrast, asterisk, interrobang, underlining, brackets dash infrequently. There clear differences between content uses. findings indicate 10–11 year-old find narrative offers opportunities for creative uses even though they not prompted do this. also suggest such – like as whole warrant further investigation.
